I burned SP2 and SP3 to a cd which I have used at least one other time with no problems and manually installed them.
No antivirus installed yet as I have been trying to get IE8 on this machine but it wont install. It gets hung in a loop "downloading files". In fact yesterday I was trying to repair a friend's old computer by reinstalling XP. I had this problem with his hard drive, so I put in a "new" one. I downloaded Ie8 it let me do that and tried installing from there. Stuck on "downloading". It goes on forever. It's just Windows Update that wont work.
Turned on Auto Update. Turned on Windows Installer There is no antivirus
